Metropolitan Universities journal (MUJ) is a quarterly, open access journal targeted to higher education leaders. MUJ is published by the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities and is hiring for two positions.

Managing editor

MUJ is looking for an experienced managing editor to lead our authors and editorial team through the production process to ensure we produce and release our quarterly publication in a timely and professional manner. Reporting to the executive editor, the managing Editor (a part-time and remote role) will create and oversee a consistent review and publication process for manuscripts and ensure a positive experience for authors and guest editors.

In order to be successful in maintaining high publication standards, the managing editor will:

  • Establish the production timeline for each issue in coordination with the executive editor
  • Manage communications with prospective and submitting authors
  • Serve as primary point person and manager for the MUJ OJS system and platform, including training guest editors and reviewers
  • Identify and implement best practices for review and publication workflows, as well as tools and templates to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the publishing process
  • Assist in evaluating finalized manuscripts for compliance with journal requirements
  • Formatting articles for publication
  • Proactively mitigate or resolve issues as they arise
  • Project management, including the ability to coordinate with remote team members and authors
  • Previous working experience as managing editor or copyeditor is a plus, but not a requirement
  • The managing editor should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as English or communications or have a knowledge of the journal’s content area.

MUJ publishes four issues per year. While the workload will fluctuate based on the production schedule, on average the managing editor can expect to work 5–7 hours weekly. The managing editor will be compensated $2,500 per issue. The managing editor will invoice CUMU following the completion of each issue for payment.

Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume, and the contact information for three references (clients or employers) to Valerie Holton, editor (vholton@cumuonline.org) by 12/10/21. Our goal is to have someone selected and on boarded by mid-January 2022.

Copy editor

As the copy editor on our editorial team, you will review and prepare written manuscripts to improve accuracy, readability, and fit with purpose. You must have a sharp eye for detail and an ability to communicate clearly to authors any revisions to ensure published works are of highest quality. Some of our authors may use English as an additional language, so you should show sensitivity to supporting authors in expressing themselves effectively. The copy editor will work remotely and manage their own schedule.

For each manuscript, you will ensure:

  • Authors’ voices sound natural and professional
  • Articles are written in accordance with the journal’s style guide (based on APA)
  • Manuscripts maintain a consistent style internally, as well as across articles
  • Manuscripts match the journal’s guidelines, including reformatting them as necessary
  • References are correctly cited, including DOIs
  • Propose, make, track and communicate manuscript revisions in a form that can be worked on collaboratively with authors

You should have and be able to demonstrate:

  • Expert knowledge of APA Style
  • Excellent written English
  • An ability to convey the elements of strong, professional English to others
  • A meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail
  • An ability to consistently produce high-quality work within agreed-upon deadlines
  • A love of and feel for language

MUJ publishes four issues per year. The copy editor will be paid $900 per issue. Issues include between 5-7 articles comprising 35,000 to 50,000 words in total. We estimate each issue will require roughly 30 hours to copy edit. The copy editor will invoice CUMU following the completion of each issue for payment.

Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume, and the contact information for three references (clients or employers) to Valerie Holton, editor (vholton@cumuonline.org) by 12/10/21. Our goal is to have someone selected and on boarded by mid-January 2022.
