Lynton Award Moves to Brown University
We are excited to announce a new partnership with the Swearer Center at Brown University. The Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty, has a new home. The Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University will succeed the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE) at the University of Massachusetts Boston in managing the award.
The management of the award formally transferred to the Swearer Center as part of the center’s National Field-Building Initiative, which aims to advance the fields of community engagement and social innovation through collaboration with students, faculty, community partners and other institutions of higher education. The new partnership between CUMU and the Swearer Center was announced at a reception on Monday, January 30, at Brown to celebrate the initiative’s kickoff.
“Through this initiative, Brown and the Swearer Center seek to embrace and expand our institutional civic role in higher education,” said Swearer Center Director Mathew Johnson.
Metropolitan Universities journal Executive Editor Valerie Holton was on hand to represent CUMU at the reception.
“CUMU, NERCHE, and others have been greatly influenced and encouraged by Ernest Lynton’s wisdom and expertise,” Holton said. “Through the presentation of the Lynton Award at CUMU’s annual conference, we recognize an early career faculty member for their exceptional contributions in engaged scholarship. And each year we invite the recipient to submit a manuscript to the journal.”
“On behalf of CUMU, I would like to thank John Saltmarsh and the NERCHE team for establishing a strong foundation for the Engagement Classification and the Lynton Award. We look forward to continuing to honor Dr. Lynton and encourage early career faculty through this collaboration with the Swearer Center,” Holton added.
