CUMU Welcomes It’s Newest Member-At-Large—Dr. Tomas Morales

The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities would like to congratulate Dr. Tomas D. Morales for his appointment as Member-at-Large. He will be serving through October 2017.

Dr. Morales has a rich history of service to urban and metropolitan universities across the United States. Currently, he serves as the fourth president of California State University, San Bernardino since 2012. Previously, he served as the president of CUNY’s College of Staten Island from 2007-2014. While in New York, he was appointed to Mayor Bloomberg’s City Panel on Educational Policy, the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, and as an Ambassador with the Immigrant Entrepreneur Program of the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation. He has also held positions as Vice President for Student Affairs, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and professor of education at California Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Dr. Morales is actively involved with several other national organizations, including the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the AASCU’s National Task Force on College Readiness. This group released the report “Serving America’s Future: Increasing College Readiness” to explore advocative approaches public collegiate institutions can take to better their communities. He also serves as the vice chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

“I am excited to continue my lifelong mission to improve the access and quality of public higher education within our urban communities, and believe my position in the Coalition will effectively allow me to pursue that goal,” Dr. Morales explained. “I had the privilege of serving as a committee member for two years as president of the College of Staten Island, and I hope this insiders experience and perspective will make my work with the current Committee all the more impactful.”

CUMU President Dr. Richard Guarasci added that he “knows Tomas will continue to be a valuable addition to the Committee. All of us at CUMU look forward to hearing his insights and learning from his extensive experience serving urban and metropolitan communities and academic institutions across the U.S.”

CUMU is grateful for his extensive experience in the field of higher education and look forward to his ideas about how to further the Coalition’s mission in 2017!
