On Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, the Howard R. Swearer Center at Brown University, in partnership with the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), opened the call for the 2018 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty.

Faculty, staff, administrators, and students are invited to consider nominating a deserving pre-tenure faculty member at a public or not-for-profit college or university for the annual award, which recognizes a full-time faculty member who is pre-tenure at tenure-granting campuses or early career (i.e., within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts, and who connects their teaching, research, and service to community engagement.

The Lynton Award, which found a new administrative home at the Swearer Center in January 2017, emphasizes community-engaged scholarly work across faculty roles. The scholarship of engagement represents an integrated view of faculty roles in which teaching, research/creative activity, and service overlap and are mutually reinforcing. The scholarship is also characterized by scholarly work tied to a faculty member’s academic expertise, is of benefit to the external community, is visible and shared with community stakeholders, and reflects the mission of the institution.

Swearer Center Executive Director and Brown University Associate Dean for Engaged Scholarship Mathew Johnson, Ph.D. is looking forward to celebrating 2017 Lynton Award winner, Laurie Walker, Ph.D., at the 2018 Lynton Colloquium in April.

“We are excited to review applicants from the distinguished nominee pool this year,” Dr. Johnson said. “We are equally as excited to welcome our colleagues to Brown University in April in celebration of their achievements in the scholarship of engagement.”

The Swearer Center will host the Lynton Colloquium, “Navigating Faculty Reward Policy and Practice for Community Engagement: Post Tenure Reflections,” featuring a keynote from Dr. Walker and a panel from Lynton Award recipients Dr. Farrah Jacquez (2013) and Dr. Eric DeMeulenaere (2015). A formal invitation and RSVP form will be available on Feb. 21, 2018.
