The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) is the organization for universities and other anchor institutions that recognize Place Does Matter. As the longest-running and largest organization committed to serving the unique population of urban and metropolitan universities and their partners, CUMU continues to focus on supporting and growing a community of like-minded individuals and institutions who together will develop answers to the pressing educational, economic, and social issues of the day.
Cutting Edge Research
CUMU’s journal, Metropolitan Universities (MUJ), is among the leading resources for applied research on the role of universities and other anchor institutions in promoting the advancement of education and supporting positive change in urban and metropolitan areas. The current issue and all previous issued of the MUJ are available in digital format on our website.
Additionally, the Coalition publishes aggregated impact studies and reports that demonstrate the value of our institutions and partnerships. The studies provide members with a baseline to assess and evaluate their own progress in areas such as economic and workforce development, technology transfer, college preparedness, etc.
Building Partnerships Among Anchor Institutions
A growing consensus is emerging that anchor institutions in urban and metropolitan areas are a proven method to promote educational attainment, economic development, and social well-being. CUMU members include institutions of higher education along with their partners in K-12 education, healthcare, government, the non-profit sector, and the business community who seek to promote urban and metropolitan advancement.
CUMU serves as a convening agent for anchor institutions in education, healthcare, community development, and other fields that seek to partner to promote urban and metropolitan growth. CUMU provides a forum for the engagement of these stakeholders through the Metropolitan Universities journal, conferences, facilitated dialogues, the CUMU website, policy papers, and other efforts.
Influencing the State and National Policy Agenda
The nation and states face many pressing challenges; among the most pressing are those in urban and metropolitan areas. Working in collaboration with our partners in education, health, business, and government, CUMU will advocate for policies and programs that address the challenges facing the communities we serve with a focus on the four pillars that are necessary for sustainable prosperity. They are:
CUMU members will work together to develop and promote policies and initiatives that foster urban and metropolitan advancement in these areas and will work with other national organizations to secure resources for efforts that promote sustainable prosperity.
Branding and Identity
What does it mean to be a "metropolitan university” and how are we distinct? The CUMU founders struggled with this very issue and created the Coalition to provide a platform for like-minded institutions to leverage each other and disseminate the "metropolitan university” identity. Today, many, if not all, CUMU members apply the CUMU principles in their branding, fundraising campaigns, and strategic planning initiatives. Utilizing our CUMU Consultants program, members can tap into experts to help during the integration and adoption of the metropolitan principles.
