Legislation Seeks To Expand Ability of Urban Universities To Aid Neighboring Communities

“It’s important to note that this legislation is the result of the kind of work that urban institutions have been doing for decades,” says Roberta “Bobbie” O’Connell, executive director of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. “There are incubators that exist all around the country that help fund regional economic growth, get urban businesses off the ground, and create health and housing clinics.”

CUMU and AASCU Sign Partnership Agreement
CUMU and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) signed a formal partnership agreement in November declaring their support of each other’s missions and members. The partnership includes support of public policy initiatives, workforce development, economic development and various other aspects of community stewardship.

Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities Welcomes new Leadership
Fresno State was home to the 16th annual Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) Conference last week. Over 200 participants and 90 presenters attended the event. Keynote speakers were Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class and Fresno Mayor, Ashley Swearengin. The 2010-2011 Executive Board was announced at the Presidential Luncheon on October 25, 2010, following an election held earlier that day.
