We begin a new academic year in trying times.  At California State University, the country’s largest public university, serving over 450,000 students — 47 percent of color — the year opens with an unprecedented $564 million cut to its budget.  On my campus, CSU Dominguez Hills, this amounts to $16.1 million, or 22% of my general operating fund.

The Nominating Committee of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities requests nominations of CEOs of Coalition member institutions to serve 2-year terms (October 2009-2011) on the Coalition Executive Committee for the positions of

  • Membership Development Committee Chair
  • Communications and Public Relations Committee Chair

The election will be held at the annual meeting of the Presidents’ Council during the 2009 Coalition Conference at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, on Monday, October 12, 2009.

NERCHE Announces 2009 Ernest A. Lynton Award Winner
Nick Tobier, Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has been named the 2009 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty.  Through his scholarship, teaching, and publicly-oriented art, Nick has demonstrated an impressive commitment to engagement both within the University of Michigan and in the communities in which he lives and works. Nick will be recognized during the upcoming Opening Luncheon at the CUMU Conference. [read more]

Learn & Serve America—CUMU Supports Full Funding!
As CUMU communities continue to need more education, housing, health, and social welfare support the mission and results of Learn and Serve America become that much more important.  Recently, the FY 2010 Labor, HHS, Education House Appropriations bill funded Learn and Serve America at a level of $39.5M.  Soon after, CUMU wrote a letter urging Congress to support Learn and Serve with a $50M budget and an additional $10M to aid in programming for Campuses of Service, Youth Engagement Zones and Summer of Services. Congressman David Wu to introduce “Urban University Renaissance Act of the 21st Century”
This Act provides appropriations for programs such as:

  • Community Outreach Partnerships Centers
  • Urban Community Engagement Institutional Capacity Grants
  • Housing and Urban Development Early Career Awards for Researchers
  • National Urban Grant University Program
  • National Innovation Council
  • Urban Teachers
  • State and Local Alignment Grants
