brownHeadwinds: Can Strategic Plans and Budget
Cuts Coexist?

Two-and-a-half years ago, when we published our new Strategic Plan for 2008-2013, my colleagues and I at UT Chattanooga were excited!  The plan emphasizes strategic partnerships; partnerships with our metropolitan network of businesses and agencies, with our community and state leaders, but also partnerships with our students, our staff, our faculty, and our alumni.  To arrive at this plan, a broad cross section of our campus community, along with corporate, education, nonprofit and government leaders, had met repeatedly for over a year in small groups and large to discuss what our university means to its constituents and how we could continue to build its influence and benefits to even higher levels.  The plans, dreams, and hopes were running high.

APPROPRIATION SPOTLIGHT: Promise Neighborhoods

Department of Education announces “Promise Neighborhoods Planning Grants”

Program Purpose: The Promise Neighborhoods Program is intended to significantly improve the educational and developmental outcomes of children in our most distressed communities, and to transform those communities. Because the challenges faced by communities with high concentrations of poverty are interrelated, Promise Neighborhoods is taking a comprehensive approach designed to ensure that children have access to a continuum of cradle-through-college-to-career solutions, with strong schools at the center, that will support academic achievement, healthy development, and college and career success.

Eligibility Requirements. Entities eligible to receive Promise Neighborhoods planning grants include:  (1) nonprofit organizations, which may include faith-based nonprofit organizations, and  (2) institutions of higher education. 

Number of New Awards Anticipated: 20
Range of New Awards: $400,000 - $500,000

surveyCUMU Impact Survey Deadline Extended to May 7th CUMU, in partnership with the Great Cities Institute, released the CUMU Impact Survey to member institutions in late March.   The survey will collect information on your university’s partnerships and investments that are improving urban communities and driving regional economic growth.

NERCHE, in collaboration with CUMU, requests nominations for the annual Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty. This award recognizes a faculty member who is pre-tenure at tenure-granting campuses and early career (within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts and who connects his or her teaching, research/creative activity and service to community engagement. This award will be presented at the 16th Annual CUMU Conference.

Call for 2012 and 2013 Conference Hosts
The CUMU Executive Committee invites you to submit a proposal to host the 2012 or 2013 annual conference. The Coalition provides the host institution with $20,000 to cover keynote speakers and other related expenses. Host site submission deadline is May 15, 2010.
