RosenbergOn the Edge:  The Thin Line Between Global and Local

Untold number of bones, bodies and buildings were crushed in the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010.  This natural disaster reminds us once again of the fine line between global and local.  For anchor institutions in South Florida, such as Florida International University, it demands from us clarity about our missions and a sense of purpose and concern that extends far beyond our ascribed objectives.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS--2010 CONFERENCE

The 16th annual CUMU conference, hosted by California State University, Fresno from October 24 to 26, 2010 will focus on “Aligning the Metropolitan University with Business, Government, and the Nonprofit Sectors.” This theme invites a broad discussion of the ways in which the key contributors to a dynamic and successful urban mission work together.

In addition to faculty, students, and administrators, community members from outside the university are especially welcome to propose presentations. Proposals are invited to address achievements, challenges, and lessons learned under the following general topics:

  • Economic DevelopmentProposal
  • Infrastructure Development
  • Human Development
  • Relationships and synergies
  • Alignment of academic programs

The submission deadline is April 15, 2010.

CALL FOR 2010 AND 2013 CONFERENCE HOSTS

conferenceThe CUMU Executive Committee invites you to submit a proposal to host the 2012 or 2013 annual conference.  The Coalition provides the host institution with $20,000 to cover keynote speakers and other related expenses.

Proposals should be submitted by May 15, 2010, and will be reviewed by the CUMU Conference and Executive Committees in June.

As metropolitan-based higher education institutions, members of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities are uniquely positioned and increasingly viewed as driving engines of local economic development.  The survey will collect information on your university’s partnerships and investments that are improving urban communities and driving regional economic growth

ACE MeetingJoin CUMU @ the Upcoming ACE annual meeting
CUMU President Steve Diner would like to invite you to join him and members of the Executive Committee for a meeting of CUMU leaders at the upcoming ACE annual meeting on Monday, March 8, 2010 2:30-3:30 in the Maryvale B Room in Phoenix, AZ.  CUMU leaders will be discussing the Impact Survey, the possibility of CUMU Regional Seminars, and Urban & Metropolitan Policy affecting CUMU members.

The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education is an new on-line, referred journal concerned with exploring community engagement and community based learning perspective, research, and practice.  CUMU member Indiana State University is hosting the journal and Nancy Rogers is serving as Editor.
