CUMU PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES |
Integrating the Urban University and its City Government
Dr. Wendell Pritchett
Chancellor, Rutgers University – Camden
For any leader of an urban university, the opportunity to participate in the creation of a new city government would provide wonderful opportunities to enhance the integration of their institution with their host community. For me, new to the job of Chancellor of Rutgers University–Camden, and new to the city (though not the region), the opportunity to lead the transition team for our new mayor (and alumna) Dana Redd has been illuminating, productive, and invaluable.

The Coalition is partnering with the Great Cities Institute to conduct a study measuring the impact CUMU institutions have on our cities and metropolitan regions. The survey will collect information on your university’s partnerships and investments that are improving urban communities and driving regional economic growth.
The purpose of the survey is three-fold:
1.To assess the practices of the membership of CUMU in light of its mission of engaged place-based institutions and their presence in the metropolitan areas. This will help solidify the membership and generate a resilient identity for the organization.
2. To help the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities make the case to policymakers that the programs and initiatives that metropolitan institutions of higher education engage in warrant ongoing or new public funding.
3. To strengthen the mission and identity of the individual institutions collecting the data.
A Special Thanks to the Annie E. Casey Foundation for their generous support. Thank you also to the CUMU members that have voluntarily contributed thus far:
