RamseyUniversity-Elementary School Partnership is Changing Lives

President, University of Louisville

Michael was only a fourth-grader last year, but every morning he roamed the hallways of his school toting double-sided tape and a stapler to fix any bulletin board that looked messy. Not only did he take a lot of pride in the job, but at the end of the school year, he told Atkinson Elementary School counselor Lisa Hirsch-Aarvig that it “helped me improve my grades and make more friends.”Michael was one of 20 Atkinson students assigned “jobs” in an experiment created by University of Louisville social work students to build self-esteem in young students. The program was launched through an ongoing effort to improve one of our city’s most impoverished schools.

Jean-Michel Cousteau, Underwater Explorer, Educator and Environmentalist


CousteauThe son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, Cousteau spent much of his life with his family exploring the world's oceans aboard Calypso and Alcyone.  After his father's death in 1997, Cousteau founded Ocean Futures Society in 1999 to carry on this pioneering work.  Today, as president of Ocean Futures Society, Cousteau travels the globe, meeting with world leaders and policymakers, both at the grassroots level and the highest echelons of government and business, educating young people, documenting stories of change and hope, and lending his reputation and support to help energize alliances for positive change.

Learn & Serve America—CUMU Supports Full Funding!
As CUMU communities continue to need more education, housing, health, and social welfare support the mission and results of Learn and Serve America become that much more important.  Recently, the FY 2010 Labor, HHS, Education House Appropriations bill funded Learn and Serve America at a level of $39.5M.  Soon after, CUMU wrote a letter urging Congress to support Learn and Serve with a $50M budget and an additional $10M to aid in programming for Campuses of Service, Youth Engagement Zones and Summer of Services. Congressman David Wu to introduce “Urban University Renaissance Act of the 21st Century”
This Act provides appropriations for programs such as:

  • Community Outreach Partnerships Centers
  • Urban Community Engagement Institutional Capacity Grants
  • Housing and Urban Development Early Career Awards for Researchers
  • National Urban Grant University Program
  • National Innovation Council
  • Urban Teachers
