Curb Appeal: Little Things Mean A Lot

With population loss comes blighted neighborhoods, boarded up store fronts and abandoned factories all too often located on corridors leading to campus. Unfortunately, this is the view that many of our prospective students and their parents, as well as many others, conjure up when they think of Youngstown and Youngstown State University

CALL FOR PROPOSALS--2010 CONFERENCE (Deadline approaching) |
The 16th annual CUMU conference, hosted by California State University, Fresno from October 24 to 26, 2010 will focus on "Aligning the Metropolitan University with Business, Government, and the Nonprofit Sectors". This theme invites a broad discussion of the ways in which the key contributors to a dynamic and successful urban mission work together.
In addition to faculty, students, and administrators, community members from outside the university are especially welcome to propose presentations. Proposals are invited to address achievements, challenges, and lessons learned under the following general topics:
- Economic Development

- Infrastructure Development
- Human Development
- Relationships and synergies
- Alignment of academic programs
The submission deadline is April 15, 2010.

A New Paradigm for Economic Development
Championed by SUNY Chancellor, Nancy Zimpher, The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government has released a study focusing on the development and implementation of public policy in multiple states. The report, A New Paradigm for Economic Development, discusses the importance of how innovation in the economy is giving rise to a new model for state economic development programs - one of which the development and distribution of knowledge is at least as important as more traditional incentive programs.

Former CUMU President co-authors Book
Virginia Commonwealth University's President Emeritus, Dr. Eugene Trani, and Dr. Robert Holsworth co-authored a book titled The Indispensable University: Higher Education, Economic Development, and the Knowledge Economy. The book was co-published and released in early March by ACE and Rowman & Littlefield. Some of the topics covered include the following: the role of university presidents as change leaders; the relationship between higher education institutions and the political leadership of cities, states, and nations; successful models of partnerships between higher education and the private sector; and future challenges and opportunities facing the modern university.

NERCHE, in collaboration with CUMU, requests nominations for the annual Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty. This award recognizes a faculty member who is pre-tenure at tenure-granting campuses and early career (within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts and who connects his or her teaching, research/creative activity and service to community engagement. This award will be presented at the 16th Annual CUMU Conference.

Call for 2012 and 2013 Conference Hosts
The CUMU Executive Committee invites you to submit a proposal to host the 2012 or 2013 annual conference. The Coalition provides the host institution with $20,000 to cover keynote speakers and other related expenses.
Host site submission deadline is May 15, 2010.
