Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities Welcomes New Leadership

Election at the 20th annual conference welcomes new Executive Committee members


SYRACUSE, NY The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) announced the 2014-2015 Executive Committee at their annual conference on October 6, 2014.


Richard Guarasci, President of Wagner College, was elected as the new CUMU President, having served as interim president since July 2014.  Tom George, Chancellor at the University of Missouri – St. Louis will serve as Vice President/Secretary and Treasurer. 


Additional 2014-2015 Executive Committee members are:

  • Member-at-Large:  Gary Miller, University of Wisconsin – Green Bay
  • Member-at-Large:  Devorah Lieberman, University of La Verne
  • Member-at-Large:  Linda Bennett, University of Southern Indiana
  • Member-at-Large:  Mildred Garcia, California State University, Fullerton
  • Member-at-Large:  David Atkinson, MacEwan University (Canada)
  • Member-at-Large:  Divina Grossman, University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth
  • Member-at-Large:  Michael Lovell, Marquette University
  • President Emeritus: Wendell Pritchett, Interim Dean, The University of Pennsylvania School of Law
  • CEO of the Administrative Headquarters: Tim Chandler, Acting President, Towson University

I am delighted to be serving as a member-at-large on the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities’ Executive Committee. I hope to focus on expanding international membership and increasing the involvement of our international members in Coalition activities as I feel the mission of my institution, and others like mine, closely align with CUMU’s values,” says Dr. David Atkinson, President of MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.


Syracuse University served as the host institution of the 20th annual CUMU conference.  Over 200 people from across the country were in attendance.  Syracuse University joined the Coalition in 2010. Like all CUMU members, SU is deeply invested in the well-being and future of its metropolitan area – Syracuse and Central New York. They work collaboratively to construct, maintain, and expand civil and social infrastructure to address challenges in key areas of environmental sustainability, entrepreneurship, neighborhood revitalization, and k-12 education.
