Message from CUMU Conference Host President
Dear Colleagues,
California State University, Fresno is honored to be selected as the host of the16th Annual CUMU Conference on October 24-26, 2010. This year’s conference theme, “Aligning the Metropolitan University with Business, Government and the Nonprofit Sectors,” invites a broad discussion of the ways in which the key contributors to a dynamic and successful urban mission work together.
Fresno serves as an excellent background for conversations on how the many elements of a sustainable and vibrant urban culture fit together. Our city of more than a half-million residents has a cultural diversity and genuine spirit that earned Fresno the distinction of being named an All-American City.
Our lineup offers you an opportunity to take advantage of a number of educational and engaging events:
- Before the conference: On Saturday, attendees are invited to choose a day trip to either Yosemite National Park or Hearst Castle/wine tasting. A special bus tour of a downtown revitalization neighborhood will precede the opening plenary session on Sunday.
- During the conference: Presenters this year will focus on topics related to economic development, infrastructure development and human development; relationships and synergies among the three; relationships and synergies among university, business, government, and nonprofit sectors; and alignment of academic programs and priorities with urban and community initiatives. Featured Speakers include: Richard Florida, Heather Grant, Doug Henton and Ashley Swearengin
- Networking: Attendees will meet and greet sponsors and exhibitors and have access to the wireless Cybercafé.
- A special reception: A visit to the Fresno State Winery will include a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception. California State University, Fresno was the nation’s first winery on a university campus to have a winery fully licensed to produce, bottle and sell wine.
CUMU’s 16th Annual Conference promises a rich opportunity for leaders from urban and higher education circles to share strategies and successes.
I look forward to welcoming you to Fresno!
Sincerely,
John D. Welty
